Water to a Great Season

Most of the grass varieties that make up lawns in the Greater Chicagoland area, including Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin, are extremely durable and hearty plants. With the varied seasons the region experiences, these grasses have evolved to handle lots of different weather.

Even with that durability though, there are steps that should be taken at the start of every season to help set up a healthy, vibrant, and resilient grass-scape.

One of the best things to help get grass off to a healthy growing season is to ensure proper watering and irrigation. By ensuring that grass gets adequate water as it comes out of winter dormancy, it helps to foster a deep, strong, root system. Healthy roots anchor the lawn and allow for the maximum uptake of soil nutrients and water for the rest of the season.

In the upper Midwest, Spring tends to be very unpredictable, with big changes in the weather patterns. It’s not at all uncommon for weather to be in the 80’s and then drop back to the 50’s in just a day or two. Coupled with the inconsistency of Spring rain and windy days, a lawn can be under heavy stress almost as soon as it starts to grow!

While it’s most often heat that is associated with dry grounds and lawns, winds can create dry environments as well, even with cooler air temperatures. Fast moving air pushes moisture away from plants and accelerates ground drying. When these patterns are stacked on top of several days with no rain, the grass can really start to be starved for water.

Having your irrigation systems checked and tuned, or having a watering strategy in place early, helps to set up a great summer season. It’s important to work with a great team, like Ryco, to make sure you have a hydration plan in place. The pros at Ryco can make sure your irrigation system is running properly after the winter; by ensuring optimal performance and operation and executing repairs as needed. And if your property doesn’t rely on an in-ground irrigation system, experienced experts like the team at Ryco can help define critical watering zones and timing for sprinklers. It’s not just about turning on the water but watering the right areas for the right time as well.

Set up your lawn for a full season of healthy growing. After spring clean-ups are done, focus on proper watering to get a healthy root system, strong early season growth, and grass that is ready to handle summer heat.
